On Friday, the Scott Henderson Memorial Scholarship concert featured the most outstanding students from the Applied Music Program at Cerritos College. The scholarship was established by the Cerritos College Music Department in memory of long-time music faculty member Scott Henderson. Proceeds from the concert benefit Cerritos College applied music students.
Mr. Henderson taught music for 23 years in the Music Department, he taught band, choir, voice, theory, and music fundamentals. He died on April 21, 1997.
There were eleven performances from the students in the program; first was, Ensun Han on piano, Jennifer Ornelas performed on Euphonium, Michael Cruz on voice (Tenor), Eisha Del Villar on piano, Mary Ann Zacarias on voice (Soprano), Ana Rivas on Marimba, Junho Im on Baritone, Sherman Pascoe on Electric Guitar, Mary Ann Zacarias and Cynthia Hernandez doing a duet, and Kyounghee Kim on piano.
In the middle of the performance there were scholarships given out.
Cynthia Hernandez one of the students who received the Scott Henderson Scholarship said, “It was nice that the music staff picked me. I was just ecstatic that they picked me. It’s nice to get the recognition for what I do.”
She went on to say, “For the performance I did a duet, A boy like that from West Side Story. I played Anita; she is the sister in law of Mary Ann’s character Maria. I love working with Mary Ann she has shown me a lot when it comes to voice. I started in theater and now I’m doing voice.”
The students who were honored for the Scott Henderson Memorial Scholarship were Fatem Bebawi, Bridget Fonseca, Cynthia Hernandez, Rusty Kennedy, and Phyllis Reimer.
Yamaha Scholarship was given out to Robin Davis, and Kyounghee Kim.
Ernest Anthony Gonzalez Scholarship was given out to Josue Orozco.
The Norwalk Women’s Club Scholarship was given out to Sherman Pascoe.
The Music Club Scholarship went to Archy Posada.
