The Teleconference Center was packed with students to watch the afternoon show of “Marx in Soho,” which was played on Oct. 17.
The flyer for the play read, “ Suppose Dr. Marx were to be resurrected now and transported by error to the Soho neighborhood in New York City instead of Soho, London. What would he say about our world, modern capitalism, and his theories? Do not miss this play which is being hosted by the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance.”
A second flyer bearing the title “FMLA Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance,” read, “Come join us to discuss Gender Politics and Issues! “One thing about equality is not just that you be treated equally to a man, but that you treat yourself equally to the way you treat a man.”
Tania Torres, the main organizer, invited all those to attend a FMLA meeting at the Liberal Arts Building, room LA 27, scheduled for 11 a.m. the following day.
Walter Fernandez, history professor, said, “Howard Zinn wrote this play with the idea as to what Karl Marx would say if he was resurrected today, and that the play was meant to inspire people as to the existing political and economic system and also make people interested in exploring Karl Marx.
“Zinn was critical of capitalism, and he was a liberal critic, having authored the book ‘Peoples’ History of the U.S.,’ as to the question how students would benefit from this play.”
He continued saying, “It certainly would benefit the students by stimulating their thinking about Karl Marx and his theories and develop their own opinion.”
