Underworld: Awakening is the newest installment in the Underworld series that continues the story of the never ending war between vampires and lycans, sure to satisfy the fans that favor brutal, gory action scenes over intricate story-telling.
In the new film, humans have discovered the underworld of vampires and lycans and initiate a mass extermination of the newly discovered species called “The Purge.
Selene returns after escaping a state of cryogenic suspension for 12 years and is greeted to a new world where vampires and lycans are hunted and killed. Her search for Michael, her lover and vampire-lycan hybrid, leads her to a daughter she never knew existed.
Her daughter is revealed to be a powerful hybrid capable of curing lycans of their weakness to silver and so, war to protect her from the lycans begins.
Awakening hits the floor running with bullet showers and explosions that gets the audience pumped up and excited for more thrilling action scenes between the two powerful races.
Action sequences between the vampires and lycans are fast, over the top and satisfyingly brutal, although it may be too much for the fain of heart. Almost every scene is equipped with grenades, knives, axes, and of course, claws and fangs.
While the action scenes don’t disappoint, Awakening has it’s fair share of flaws that keep it from perfect.
Where Awakening shines in action and captivating visuals, it lacks in great storytelling. The ultimate premise seems more of a setup for future installments and does little to expand on the backgrounds of new characters introduced to the series
The film begins and ends with loose knots and feelings of ambiguity.
Overall, the film is sure to satisfy the classic beat ’em up fans craving raw fighting scenes full of action, letting your eyes take in the action, your brain can take a backseat during the movie since the story isn’t that great.
This is a true vampire and werewolf film.
