The Literature Club has recently established a scholarship award titled the Endeavor Award which recognizes outstanding literary works written by Cerritos College students.
The Endeavor Award is an opportunity for students to expose their work to an audience.
The entries can range from original poems or narratives to screenplays and essays.
Three scholarships will be given out by the Literature Club this semester.
The awards are as follows:
- 1st place- $150
- 2nd place- $100
- 3rd place- $50
According to the Literature Club’s rubric, the entries will be judged by following specific criteria such as originality, style, cultrual insight, development and mechanics.
For originality, the club will be looking at how fresh, unique, and interesting the piece may be.
For style, they will be considering the writer’s way of addressing the reader or situation creatively and effectively.
Regarding cultural insight, the club will be checking if the piece can provide a glimpse into culture, shows how a group thinks, and if the piece was tragic or beautiful.
For development, the club will analyzing specific details that expresses the writer’s thought process, whether or not the writer got his/her point across and for a sense of completion.
Writing mechanics such as basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation will be checked.
“This is a great oppurtunity for students to get a scholarship award onto their resume. Winning gives students confidence and it looks good to Cal States and Universities that the student put forth the effort to receive merit,” said Literature Club Vice President Vanessa Vega regarding the Endeavor Award.
In order to be eligible to apply, students must:
- Be enrolled in a minimum of 5 units at Cerritos College
- Have a minumum Cerritos College GPA of 3.0
- Submit an original poem, narrative, screenplay, essay, or any other piece of previously unpublished work that doesn’t exceed 2,500 words.
As an added incentive, the Literature Club has plans that involve gathering the winning pieces from this semester and next semester and having them published.
This should be of great motivation to students since it is not very common for undergrads to have published work.
For the average community college student, being published is not something most students can say of themselves.
If you are interested in applying for the Endeavor Award scholarship but you do not meet the above requirements, there is no need to feel discouraged.
The Literature Club will be providing students another oppurtunity for application next semsester. This will give those who do not currently meet the requirements ample time to prepare and repair their academic standing.
Professor of English at Cerritos College and co-advisor to the Literature Club, Dr. Linda Palumbo is very enthusiastic about this scholarship oppurtunity for students, “The Literature Club wants the campus community to know that we are all writers and that all writing is literature.
“This award supports every type of writing, and inquiries have been coming from all over campus from students who have written works as varied as children’s stories, research papers, graphic fiction, and scientific studies. It is wonderful to see that here in Southern California—the heart of the film and tech industries—writing is flourishing more than ever.
“There isn’t a job nowadays that doesn’t require some kind of writing, and of course global consumption of language for pleasure also is growing, so the time is right for this award. The club hopes to continue the Endeavor Award and even to expand it next semester.”
This scholarship is clearly open to any student who has an interest in literature and a desire to gain recognition for their work.
The application deadline for all submissions is Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 11:59 p.m.
