Guitars are more than just for heavy shredding.
Well at least now I know that after watching the Cerritos College First Annual Guitar Festival Concert on March 20 in the Burnight Theatre.
The Music Department announced the concert, and the idea of this was to give guitarists around Southern California a chance to spend time and perform for their peers in a manner which they feel comfortable.
From classical to jazz to soft rock, it was all the same… very boring.
I found myself trying very hard to stay awake during the concert.
Classic guitar is supposed to make you think wonderous thoughts and expand your mind to the beauty of the world.
All it made me think was, “When is this concert going to be over?”
As a guitarist, I was aware of guitars being used for many genres of music, but didn’t think it was this bad.
Musicians were covering some music legends such as Bach, the tango, and even to my surprise Ozzy Osbourne’s band.
The first ensemble from Cerritos College is really the only act I liked, mostly because of the awesome chorus and the head guitarists’ cool bridges.
I’ll admit some of the riffs in the second acts were pretty cool too.
Other than that, I must say that let classical orchrestra music stay as a classic orchestra, and leave the guitars to the rock music.
Maybe some classics can stay, like in the Mexican style, but besides that, it should die.
The electric guitar ensembles were okay at best, nothing can compare to the real thing though.
No matter how talented you are, no one can match up to Tony Iommi.
None of these people seemed to have any talent at all. It’s like they picked any two-bit hack to play.
Also, did they really need a composer to guide them through the song?
I mean, who needs to be told what high notes to hit? Isn’t that what the sheet music is for?
The ensemble came to Cerritos from Bellflower, and all over Southern California.
This was supposed to be the highlight of the evening, but I was disappointed.
If this was the highlight of the First Annual Guitar Festival, then please let this be the first and last.
I give this concert my worst rate yet, 1 out of 5.
