The student health center at Cerritos College brings the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine back to campus starting Tues. Feb. 1.
Every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., the student health center will allow enrolled students at Cerritos College to get vaccinated on campus without needing to make an appointment.
The COVID-19 Moderna vaccine at the college will give students the opportunity to receive their first, second and/or booster shot.
Nurse practitioners and authorized staff at Cerritos College will be providing the vaccine until the end of the semester at the student health building located in the southeast part of campus.
Creative writing major Sophia Sotomayor said that she is grateful for the student health center providing this service to its students.
“I haven’t been able to get my booster shot because of my schedule,” Sotomayor said, “Not having to make an appointment brings such a big weight off my shoulders.”
Sotomayor later talks about the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine being offered to students through their schools.
“There are many students who genuinely want to get vaccinated but aren’t able to get it because of their home situation,” Sotomayor said, “Allowing students the opportunity to get vaccinated is great and helps everyone stay safe.”
While the COVID-19 vaccine does not fully prevent contraction of the virus, it decreases the likelihood of contracting serious, long-term side effects.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the vaccine continues to drastically reduce the risk of hospitalization and death when people become infected with COVID-19.
“Unvaccinated people are six times more likely to test positive, nine times more likely to be hospitalized, and 14 times more likely to die from COVID-related complications,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, MD, said in a White House news briefing.
According to the California Department of Public Health, 69% of California residents are fully vaccinated. Fully vaccinated folk have either received both shots of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson.
Official walk-in dates to get your vaccine is as follows: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 1 and ending April 28.
