The Cerritos College art gallery opened with its annual art gallery exhibit on April 26 showcasing 150 students art work from photography, ceramics, art and graphic design.
The Student Art Exhibition takes place every year, in which students alike can join the competition and win cash prizes.
The art exhibit at Cerritos College is open to showcase the students works until May 11.
Students and parents alike came to visit the viewing that took place in the Fine Arts Building at the Art Gallery on Thursday evening.
Students can submit their art work and can be chosen to have their work viewed in the gallery.
The gallery opened up with a tour of the gallery at 5pm, showing many creative students works.They started the day with a gallery viewing then went on to the reception which took place outside of the fine arts building.
It started with a speech from Dr. Fiero who is the president of cerritos college. and guest jurist, artist Mark Steven Greenfield, who was chosen to select award winners in seven different varieties of media categories such as a variety of media, including:
Drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, computer graphics, photography, video editing, and animation.
The awards were funded by ASCC and the Cerritos Foundation. They gave out a total of $4,000 in prizes and scholarships. All participating artists will receive a free copy of a catalog featuring their work and others from the show.
“The faculty at Cerritos College, has created an environment to allow the arts to flourish.” Dr Fiero pointed out that not everyone had an opportunity back then, but in Cerritos College, every art major has the same opportunity to compete in competitions.
Dr. Fiero ended his speech by congratulating everyone who submitted their art work and made it in the gallery.
Mark Steven Greenfield began handing out awards to the students who were nominated.
The awards that were given out included: Free hand drawing faculty awards, honorable mention and photography awards, ceramics, graphic design, film editing and animation all were nominated for awards.
Faculty chose awards for students who showed exemplary work.
Everyone who did participated in the art work. Gets a free catalog.
All the winners took a group photo at the end of the reception.
Juan Vasquez is a student at Cerritos College who loves art, and his a recent art piece is displayed in the art exhibit in Cerritos College.
Juan Vasquez spoke about his piece and what art means to him, ” I would say what sparked my passion for art, would be the freedom of expression within it.”
He continued by talking about his greatest inspirations from painters and photographer to even poets such as Allen Ginsberg.
