Cerritos College Art Gallery is hosting the Student Fine Art Exhibition from April 23- May 8.
The gallery reception and awards ceremony was held last Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
There were approximately 75-100 guests in attendance. The gallery features many types of art such as ceramics, paintings, ink and charcoal, calligraphy and many more.
The students submitted their work to the teachers and then the teachers had to pick from the ones submitted to be placed in the gallery.
During the reception students, family members and faculty observed the different forms of art in the gallery.
The faculty in the Fine Arts division held a awards ceremony at the reception in the court yard of the gallery for the students that participated in the gallery.
“The student exhibition is a very powerful exhibition,” Hagop Najarian said as he began to present the awards.
The faculty were very enthusiastic and proud about handing out the awards to their students.
Seven students received the John De Mott Memorial Scholarship. The winners of the John De Mott Memorial Scholarship are Dora Lee who received $100 and John Magallanes, Robyn Readyuoth, Katherine Peterson, Ariel Rios, Tracy Garner and Victor Hugo Silva who received $50. Each teacher got to pick who would receive the award.
To students also received the Jack Cassidy Scholarship, a scholorship for design. The winners of the scholarship are David Gunn and Dominic Romo. Each winner will receive a $250 scholarship from the Board of Trustees in a week.
The teachers encouraged all the students to keep up the good work. ” I want you to double your efforts and get in the gallery next year,” commented Bonnie Barrett.
Not all students were present to received their awards.
Steven Portigal joked with the students toward the end of the awards ceremony by adding, “any unclaimed prizes are split by the faculty.”
Najarian ended the awards ceremony by thanking the Donors for all their support in the event. This year’s donors were Associated Students of Cerritos College, Cerritos College Foundation, The De Mott Family, The Cassidy Family and Folletts Bookstore.
With a smile on his face, Najarian wished the students all good luck on their finals. “Have a great finals week kids,” added Najarian.
The gallery is located in the Arts and Crafts Building in AC-50. The Gallery hours are from Monday- Thursday from 11-4 p.m. and evenings Tuesday-Thursday 6-9 p.m.
