The Board of Trustees welcomed newly elected members, former Cerritos College Disabled Students administrator Dr. Bob Hughlett and South Gate city clerk Carmen Avalos on Dec. 7.
Both replace former Board members Bob Verberder, who lost his re-election bid and Eric Gutierrez who did not run for re-election.
Verberder served as a Board member for 12 years and Gutierrez served for four years.
Each received a certificate of recognition for their commitment to serving Cerritos College and its students and faculty.
“I love this Board, ” Verberder said, “and not only that, but all of the members and I ended up being friends.”
He added that Cerritos College is about building a future.
Gutierrez said, “I am happy and confident about where Cerritos College is going.”
He added that being on the Board of Trustees and helping Cerritos College become one of the best schools was like being at Disneyland.
“It has been a nice ticket ride.”
After Hughlett and Avalos were sworn in, both expressed a great and collaborative partnership in the coming years.
“I am looking forward to working with the Board,” Avalos said.
“Cerritos College has great staff and students,” Hughlett said.
Both agreed that Cerritos College is on the right track for its continued success technologically.
Ted Edmiston, who served as president for the last year, was also replaced as president.
The Board elected John Moore to serve as its new president.
Moore expressed his appreciation toward Edmiston for setting the example of a great leader.
In addition, Bob Arthur was elected to be secretary of the Board.
Lastly, Tom Jackson was elected as vice president of the Board.
Cerritos College president, Dr. Noelia Vela welcomed Hughlett and Avalos.
“I am looking forward to working with you Dr. Hughlett,” she said.
“I have heard great things about the contributions you (Avalos) have made to the city of South Gate,” Vela added.
She looked forward to the continued contributions each one will bring to Cerritos College.
