So, what if the film “Brokeback Mountain” is about two cowboys in love with each other? Does that give people like “Late Show” host David Letterman the right to joke about the movie’s success?
No, because no matter where you go there will always be a struggle to treat people equally no matter who you are.
Now, Letterman goes out of his way of saying that the “Top Ten signs That You Are a Gay Cowboy” are:
? You enjoy ridin’, ropin’ and redecoratin’.? Instead of a saloon, you prefer a salon.? Native Americans refer to you as “Dances With Men.”
To others that may be funny, but to me that is taking it too far.
How fast Letterman has forgotten that he recently had Oprah Winfrey on his show kissing up to her for the joke he said when he hosted the Academy Awards a few years ago.
“Brokeback” has received criticism for its portrayal of gay men, but any film dealing with homosexuality has before.
It needs to stop.
Protests held against the film have not turned back crowds from the movie theaters and besides, don’t think religious organizations have anything better to do?
Could someone tell me where does it say in the Bible that God punishes anyone who is gay and that he will send them straight to hell?
Just as blacks were fighting for equal rights during the Civil Rights movement it is good to know that director Ang Lee, who was born in Taiwan, took a risk and it has paid off.
I could only think of Kimberly Pierce’s film, “Boys Don’t Cry” as the only other film to receive acclaim and win an Oscar.
People like Letterman can joke all they want but, in a world that continues to struggle with acceptance for who we are, hopefully “Brokeback Mountain” has only just begun to help people see the big picture instead of a small frame.
