Cerritos students had the opportunity to hear Latin music from two up incoming artists who were promoting their CD releases during the Music Department Concrete Underground series at Falcon Square on Feb 21.
Malverde’s CD, Mi Palabra, was re-released by Machete Music Records performed four songs from the album and to send a message of the importance of staying in school.
During his four song set performance he pointed out that, “Hip-Hop can not be defined by race or culture.”
After his performance Malverde said, “My music is socially conscious and I am here to share my experience to follow your dream.”
Malverde said that when he decided to go back to school he went back to get a bachelor degree in political science.
Following Malverde was Abusivo who performed three songs from his album El Hotel De La Hotel.
His hope for what his own performance would bring was that Latin music would be heard in any language.
“Cerritos College is the first community college I have tour,” Abusivo added, “and I have toured high schools such as Garfield High School and Woodrow Wilson High School.”
He commented that he hoped that Cerritos students would “feel the message” that was sent.
Abusivo’s backup singer Luna agreed adding, “I loved they we had a chance to performance here at (Cerritos), and you know students here don’t know you.”
However, for students it was a great way for them to be exposed to something different.
“I have never seen a live performance (from an artist) before,” Mario Rosas, undecided major said.
Mayra Castelo, theater arts major, said that what she liked the most was the fact that both artists focused on reaching their audience.
“It was cool and energizing,” she added, “and I would come back if the event was held again.”
