Michelle Branch singing country? Hard to believe but the “Are You Happy Now” singer along with fellow singer/songwriter, Jessica Harper, who formed the group, The Wreckers, do sing country music in its first single, “Leave the Pieces” from the CD Stand Still, Look Pretty (Maverick Records) to be released May 23.
The Wreckers, formed in 2004, and were first heard on the soundtrack to WB’s television show, One Tree Hill with the song, “The Good Kind.”
At first listen, fans of the 22-year-old may be surprised, if not glad that she has returned to the studio to record a song.
However, there is appeal to the song’s lyrics themselves because it is not just another country song, but more that Branch has explored another genre to draw the audiences’ attention.
She does a good job at that because the song is about not worrying about having a person’s heart broken.
Yes, it is true another song about the end of a relationship to the person you love the most.
“You’re not sure that you love me/and you’re not sure enough to let me go/Baby, and it ain’t fair you know, to keep me hanging ’round/Say you don’t want to hurt me/Don’t want to see my tears/Why you still standing here just watching me drown?” sings Branch at the beginning.
Following she says, “And it’s alright I’ll be fine/Don’t worry about this heart of mine/Take your love and hit the road/There’s nothing you can do or say/You’re gonna break my heart anyway/So just leave the pieces when you go.”
Between both the beginning and end Branch is simple in saying that no matter what everyone has to face the heartache of relationships that end. No doubts. The end.
What is appealing about the song is that the guitar emphasis from both Branch and Harp carry the song and from first listen the song with have appeal not only to those who listen to country music but those who are drawn to the music of Branch.
From the time that Branch first released, “The Spirit Room” in 2001 and followed with collaboration with Carlos Santana for the songs, “The Game of Love” from the album Supernatural (1999) and “I’m Feeling You” (2004) she has had hits (“Everywhere” and “Are You Happy Now”) and has continued that success with another hit on her hands.
