In a 3-4 vote the ASCC Cabinet denied a proposal brought forth by the Cerritos College Model UN for funding of its conference but in a 6-1 vote approved the Dental Hygienists Association Club’s proposal for its conference on Monday.
Dani Carroll, advisor of the dental hygiene club, said, “We are thrilled to hear about the approval of our proposal.
“The dental hygiene students have worked very hard in preparation for the upcoming convention and with this added support, we will be able to send six dental hygiene students to represent Cerritos College in the National Table Clinic Association.”
The NTCA is an informal tabletop presentation presented to professional dental hygienists, using oral communication and visual media to inform, clarify, and review material on a specific topic.
It presents useful and timely professional information in an original and interesting format and many dental hygiene schools across the nation now participate in this competition.
Patricia Stewart, DHA member, was also excited to hear the proposal passed and said that it’s wonderful because it now gives students a chance to go to the competition to not only represent the club but also represent Cerritos College.
The Model UN’s first conference was to be held on April 21 through April 25 in which it would create interest in politics and world decisions.
The amount that the Model UN was asking for was $1,713.50 but members were quick to express concern over the request.
“Taking a look at the proposal the numbers just don’t add up,” Commissioner of Budget and Finance Cynthia Ho said.
“The discrepancy of what the (Model UN) club is asking for is two hundred dollars,” she continued, “and also the proposal says that nine people are going, but there are eight people who are counted for.”
Holly Bogdanovich, director of student activities, was quick to add that there would be eight students and one adviser going to the conference.
From the $1, 713.50 that the club is asking for “members of the club will be paying for it out of pocket,” ASCC President Paulo Amaral said.
Bogdanovich, said, “If the trip is cancelled and if the Cabinet does approve the bill then the club will refund the ASCC.”
Amaral added that if less then eight people go to the conference, the club would receive less money.
However, upon hearing that there was a discrepancy in the proposal and the low requesting of funds the bill was denied.
