An estimated 155 residents of the Avalon at Cerritos housing facility were treated to a performance from a live country band and a meal in its annual Hoe Down Day celebration last Thursday.
This year’s theme was “Heartfelt” and also was in celebration of National Assistants Week.
Avalon at Cerritos is a campus housing facility located south of the campus designed for senior citizens from the ages of 62 and older.
Kris Schero, Avalon assistant executive director, said that events such as these gives residents and their family members a chance to interact with one another.
In addition, she said that it gives the residents a chance to get out of the house.
Laura Trujillo, Avalon executive director, agreed.
The Hoe Down days are just one of many activities that Avalon at Cerritos hosts.
Furthermore, the music department performs and there are numerous art and crafts activities at the Avalon according to Trujillo.
“We are looking for volunteers from Cerritos College to help out here at the Avalon,” she said.
As for the Hoe Down Day events, residents expressed that they were delighted that an event like this was common.
Bill Burd, a three month resident of Avalon, called the event a great one and noted the hospitality.
Maurice Vernon and his wife Hazel, Avalon residents, enjoyed listening to the music though Maurice admitted that he is not a fan of country music.
“I listen to what my wife listens to on the radio,” he said.
Hazel said that she didn’t mind the country music because she listens to all kinds of music with the exception of hard rock.
Norma Sparks, a resident since July, also expressed that the event was fun and an experience out of the ordinary for her.
For Sparks, this was the first of many events to come.
