ASCC President Joe Cobarrubio addressed senators during the ASCC Senate meeting, Wednesday, in hopes of encouraging them to inform students about the Show Pride in Your Campus Campaign to be officially launched on Oct. 19 in Falcon Square.
Also, three remaining Cabinet members were appointed as commissioners and they were:
? Gredma Casasoles, commissioner of external affairs? Stephanie Nguyen, assistant to commissioner of budget and finance? Tyler Xuetzal, assistant to commissioner of vocational outreach
During the summer Cobarrubio and Vice President Alex Armendariz developed the campaign for cleaning up the campus in an effort as Cobarrubio said, “so that Cerritos College will look and feel (like home) for not only the students but for the campus as a whole.”
Armendariz agreed. He hoped that the cleanup effort would help students be aware that this campus is for everyone.
“It would begin show students to not only keep the campus clean but also to do something that they had not thought of doing before.”
Cobarrubio commented that recently male students had asked why there are no mirrors in the men’s restrooms, and that currently there is plan for a test run is implemented with graffiti shield glass.
If the tests are a success then the ASCC will begin to order the shields, according to Cobarrubio.
Afterward, Senators expressed that they are glad that there is a focus on keeping the campus clean and hopes that it would continue.
Upon hearing the presentation by Cobarrubio, Senator Waleed Nueirat said, “It’s a start, because Cerritos College has had students come from high schools, such as Downey, Santa Fe, El Rancho and those high school student bring that mentality of not caring about their campus in college.”
Senators Brandi Holmes and Krystle Gardner also think that the campus cleanup is a good idea.
“Students should show appreciation,” Gardner said, “because this is a college.”
Not only should students show appreciation Holmes said but that they should care “because many students spend a lot of time here than they do at home.”
Lastly, Cobarrubio said that he would hope that Senators would address students, because as he put it, “All of the 32 senators will be able to reach them better than I can because there are more than 20,000 student who attend Cerritos College.”
Following the presentation the commissioner from the Cabinet were unanimously approved and after her appointment Casasolas said that she was happy she was able to continue as commissioner of external affairs.
Nguyen and Xuetzal were unavailable for comment.
“I would hope to bring political awareness to students because from what I see there is apathy from students because they don’t seem to care,” Casasolas said.
As the Nov. 7 general elections approach, Casasoles said that she would work and provide a voter guide manual for students.
“The hope is to encourage (students) to vote as well as encourage them to have an interest in not only joining the Feminist Majority League Alliance but also the State Academic Senate, so that students have a voice for their concerns.”
