There will not be a filtering of the social Web site MySpace after all, Jason Macias, commissioner of information technology, announced on Monday during the ASCC Cabinet Meeting.
Macias, along with assistant of information technology Alex Alvarez, were looking into the possibility of filtering the Internet in the computer labs after a recent incident with a group of unidentified students that threatened a lab technician after being asked to log off MySpace.
Since last year, there have been notices warning students that being on MySpace was banned however that hasn’t stopped students from logging on to the Web site with regard to the recent incident.
However, Macias said that in speaking with the Dean of Information Technology, Randy Peebles, the issue of students accessing social Web sites as MySpace or Friendster is “up in the air.”
Furthermore, Macias commented that Peebles had said that even if there was a filtering it would violate student rights to social contact.
