Members of the Cabinet, Court and Senate were appointed to their positions on Jan. 17 during the ASCC Senate meeting.
In addition, Jason Macias, former commissioner of information technology, was appointed as the ASCC Vice President.
He replaces former ASCC Vice President Alex Armendariz who stepped down last semester after six semesters of services.
Those who were appointed to the ASCC Senate were:? Senator Mario Torres? Senator Elmira Afshari? Senator Michael Gil Perez
Perez faced tough questions from Senators as to why he wanted to join Senate. He was unavailable for comment.
Afterward, the Senators also expressed wanted to help out within the ASCC.
Afshari, computer software engineering major, says that it feels good to be apart of the Senate.”The Senate is the voice of the students,” she says, “I will do everything in my power to meet the students’ needs.”
Another new member of the Senate, Torres, says that he is happy to be apart of something extraordinary and wants to be an active member of Cerritos College. “I’m very excited,” he says.
There are still 13 seats waiting to be filled and Jaime Sandoval, member of the Senate, is encouraging anyone who is interested to pick up an application.
“We need all the Senators we can get,” he says, “the more people involved, the better for all of us.”
Perla Medina, social welfare major, is interested in becoming a member of the Senate because she wants to help out the students.
Christopher Olivares, English major, was appointed commissioner of budget and finance and Joella Ann Brizuela, sports medicine major, was appointed as associate justice.
After the appointment of the ASCC Vice President, Armendariz said that he is pleased and knows that Macias will do a good job within the position.
“I will be there to mentor him when he needs help,” he said. “I said before I left the position of ASCC Vice President that I would not leave and I am a man of my word.”
Macias said that he wasn’t thinking about applying for the position for ASCC Vice President until he went to the ASCC Leadership Conference Jan. 3-5 in San Diego.
“Armendariz pulled me aside and said that there was a possibility, and that ASCC President Joe Cobarrubio said, that I was a No. 1 candidate for Vice President.”
He said he was surprised but he hopes to do a good a job as Armendariz did during his tenure.
Senator Ray Gonzalez said that what appeals to him about Macias is that he is unselfish about what he wants during his time as Vice President.
It was the speech about wanting to help the students that motivated him to think that he should be appointed Vice President.
