More than 900 Cerritos students are currently on academic probation according to a matriculation report that was presented by ASCC commissioner of budget and finance Christopher Olivares.
Also, as part of the report, prerequisite enforcement has also led those more than 900 students to seeking class petitions in the spring semester.
Academic Probation is when a student grade point average has fallen below 2.0 after attempting at least 12 units a semester.
“There has to be a program in order to solve the problem of those students on academic probation,” Olivares said.
He added that when he read the report of those students on academic probation it generated a sense of importance in finding a way to lower the number.
However, Cerritos students said that it’s the fact that students need to focus on their education that would eventually lower the number of those on academic probation.
“It also depends on the number of classes that students are taking,” Alan Velancy, film major, said. He commented that those who come to college take it for granted because parents are not telling them when to go to school.
Cesar Garcia, drawing and painting major, agreed. He said that there are students who have taken school for granted but that all students should realize money is being spent to pay for all of the classes a student enrolls in.
“There are those students who come to school,” Garcia explained, “and then hope that an instructor doesn’t show up to teach the classes and that’s where the problem is.”
One solution Garcia recommends is that students should enroll in an elective class in between the classes they are required to take. “That way the class schedules balance out and he or she wouldn’t stress out,” he said.
In regard to the more than 900 students who are currently on probation, Velancy said that college tuition should be lowered so that students can afford to come to school.
David Garcia, machine tool technician major, said that he personally thinks that those who are on an academic probation list deserve to be on that list for the simple fact that those who don’t study for classes will have to face the consequences of their actions.
As for the solution to the problem, he said that students have to know the amount of classes they can manage to take as opposed to taking every required class at once.
All three say that they have never been on academic probation before and don’t plan on doing so, because they are aware of the importance of an education.
