The women’s water polo team at Cerritos College begins its season with a record of 4-0.
With a lot of incoming freshmen and a number of returners, head coach Sergio Macias looks forward to working with a very solid group.
“I have high expectations for this team,” he said. “The great returners along with the incoming freshmen have enough talent to surpass last year’s success.”
Although the team did set a record last season, having been so close to obtaining a championship last year made the women very motivated and connected.
“Our unity, our chemistry, our depth in and out of the water is going to help us relax and stay focused on our goals,” says Angela Chiaromonte, returning driver.
“However,” Stephanie Rosero, returning utility contributes, “based on what happened last season, we’ve realized that basic skills make a big difference. So that will be something we will work harder on.”
With such a strong, and experienced veteran group, Macias states he is enabled more time to focus on improving skills rather than introducing them. “The fact that I don’t have to be telling them what to do all the time allows me to be very patient . I have confided a lot of trust on the returning group into leading this team to success.”
The excitement of the women who were on the record setting team last year is definitely feening off the new participants.
Rosero believes, “We have the potential to win this year. It’s the same good drills with more experienced people. We have trained really hard and are excited to begin our season.”
According to Macias, there are three girls who will have an immediate impact on the team this season. Rosero being one of them along with defender Yvonne Ruvalcaba, driver Angela Chiaromonte, and utility Adriana Rodriguez.
“Adriana is smart, creative, and crafty. That along with Stephanie’s leadership and Angela and Yvonne’s skills,” Macias said, “that will hopefully take us to our first apperance at state championships and finish top three at conference.”
Rosero, who is one of the best player in the state, is confident in providing leadership and vocalization for the team.
“We have more depth and the fact that we have more subs this year is going to help maintain the level of our focus and concentration. I will do my best in bringing leadership and vocalization to manage what is going on as far as what’s going on in the pool is concerned.”
Chiaromonte hopes the teams accomplishments at the end of the season will reflect all the effort and hard work they have put into their training.
She adds, “We just want to make coach proud.”
