With utility Stephanie Rosero out for the game due to a shoulder injury, Adriana Rodriguez took the main role in leading the women’s water polo team to its 11-5 win against Mt.SAC last Wednesday.
“I personally thought I did pretty bad. I kept thinking to myself ‘drop, drop, drop’ and I couldn’t get myself around to do it,” said Rodriquez.
Throughout the game she scored three times and obtained five steals.
Rodriguez added, “I kept looking for the set so when I found the chance to score, I would go ahead and go for it.”
Utility Sabrina Boling also contributed in scoring.
“We put away a lot of shots,” Boling stated, “but there were a lot more that I’m sure we could’ve scored.”
Though Cerritos came on with a rather slow start, it still managed to get on the board with a 3-0 lead during the first period.
“We had a slow first half,” driver Angela Chiaromonte regards, “but we definitely picked it up in the second half.”
She said they had a really good defense, but their offense needed to execute more.
Coach Sergio Macias agrees.
“It took a while to adjust. We were not executing well enough in the first half,” Macias said.
He adds, “We were patient enough to analyze their play and take control over the second half of the game.”
By halftime, Cerritos led Mt.SAC 7-4.
Rodriquez claimed it was much easier to play in the second half.
“We took what we saw from the first half and used it to plan our strategy for the second half,” Rodriguez stated.
“Like coach said, it was like a test. We were given the problems to work with, then we all played together in a smart manner so that we overcame them,” she said.
Defender Kristin Rivas also noticed another advantage they upheld during the game.
She said, “We continued to receive too many fouls in the first few plays. So instead of focusing so much on our offense, we tried to make better usage of our defense, and it worked.”
Chiaromonte exclaims, ” We didn’t know what to expect. We thought the game was going to close.”
Rodriguez adds, “To be honest I think all of us expected much more out of Mt. SAC. I didn’t think it was going to be this easy. “
Towards the end of the game, utility Denise Vega executed two assists while driver Angie Silva along with defender Natalie Peng scored twice.
Also, goalkeepers Miranda Bakke and Mandy Perez helped the team by stopping seven shots.
