From abusive cops to masked dancers, Cerritos College held its annual Homecoming float competition on Saturday.
Thirteen awards were honored to fourteen clubs.
The Dental Hygine club won the Amy Dozier award for Best Over-all.
Phi Theta Kappa with “The Simpson’s” along with the Accounting Club’s “The Addam’s Family” both tied for the CSEA award for best utilization of animation.
Joe Hernandez, accounting major, said, “I thought the Accounting Club’s float was awesome. The tall guy in the back really helped give this creepy feeling to the theme.”
The Forensics Club, the winner of the Faculty award for most humorous, was another hit at the Homecoming Parade with its Reno 911 theme.
“I think the Forensics Club deserved that award,” shared Monique Pedroza, English major. “Not only was the skit super funny, but the white guy with the little short shorts was too hilarious to not win anything.”
Although its float displayed a paper machie helicopter and a pretend bank robbery, Rafael Rodriguez, mechanical engineering major, believed the theme was a cheap shot.
“A short white guy with shorts and a hot chick with a wig is all it was. (Its) float looked like if (the club) threw everything together last minute,” he said.
Jose Luis Cortez, animation major, added, “The Reno 911 crew along with the wannabe Jabbwokeez were the most pathetic floats I’ve seen here at Cerritos. It was just a bunch of cardboard cut out and spray painted. (The club) could’ve at least placed people that actually knew how to dance.”
Because of the fires California experienced last year, the previous Homecoming parade was not held in the stadium.
Therefore, many onlookers were pleased the parade was held.
“I’m just glad they even had a parade,” cosmetology major Angel Jimenez shared, “It brings a lot of school spirit and it’s interesting to see the result of all the hard work the clubs put into the floats.”
One very prominent distaste that was displayed after the homecoming parade was that of who the winners of the awards were.
“What I would like to know is who were the judges and how could they be so blind to not honor the good floats,” stated Jaheim Ferrar, mathematics major. “Some clubs just painted or cut out stuff and called it a float.”
He continued, “The That ’70s Show float was cool, but really it was only a group of fat guys sitting on a couch with beer bottles. I would’ve like to have seen more creative floats like the Spider-Man one that had two scenes going on.”
After the Homecoming parade, two incidents occurred.
A female participant on the Forensics club float fainted and was attended by the Emergency Medical Technicians.
Also, Oscar Franco, student outreach commissioner, had his laptop stolen.
He believes there should be cameras in areas where float construction is being held.
“I left my laptop with all my stuff and then it was gone. There should be cameras around these types of places,” he said.
