The ASCC collected well over 5, 000 cans for the canned food drive held for the months of November and December.
This food drive was held to help the people of low or no income of Norwalk.
“People who were not able to afford food the holidays will be given the opportunity to enjoy a meal, ” said Kevin Martinez, ASCC commissioner of fine arts and communications.
Many of the clubs on campus contributed to the drive not only for charity, but as a club competition.
The Court Reporting Club collected the majority of cans, therefore winning the competition.
It is estimated that it collected about 2,000 to 2,500 cans, according to Martinez.
Although the club will not receive any monetary means of compensation, it will receive a plaque at the awards banquet held this Friday.
The cans that were collected were picked up by an organization that collects cans and distributes them to those in need.
“I think this food drive was a wonderful idea,” ASCC President Michael Barrita said, “It gave the students on campus the opportunity to contribute and show support to those in need.”
Foods such as Top Ramen soups, Cup-O-Noodles, bagged chips, and liquid pouched drinks were also contributed to the food drive.
Felipe Gomez, mathematics major, said, “I would walk past the Student Activities office and would get tempted to eat all the food there.”
Consuelo Martinez, undecided major, said, “It feels good to know that the students of Cerritos care enough to provide food for others.”
She added, “It makes me proud to see how many people actually care.”
