March is Women’s History Month. This year, like in past years, Cerritos College will be conducting a student essay contest.
The theme of the essay is leadership, and it will have to focus on a female role, and how gender obstacles were overcome.
The students of Cerritos College will have the opportunity to submit an essay; it can be a new essay or one that the student had already written for some other class, says Barbara Mueller, English instructor.
She adds, “Students can write from personal experiences, like family members, or write about a woman in the news, contemporary women or do research and write on a historical female figure.”
Dr. Linda Palumbo, women’s studies professor, says, “You don’t have to be a great writer to win this. We get entries from basic skills students to A-students. I encourage everyone, women and men, to enter the contest.”
She continued, “What we are looking for is heartfelt stories, and the odds of winning are pretty good, better than the lottery.”
Ratha Lai, English major, said, “I like entering writing contests and winning. I have entered to one contest here at Cerritos in October, a ghost story contest. I will enter this one; I want to win some money.”
Mueller says, “Students that enter to contest like this and win can list them when transferring to a four-year college and show that they got involved with their school or even apply to get a Falcon award.”
The deadline to turn in the essay is Feb. 28, and it can be turned in to Mueller.
There will be at least three judges and they will be chosen from the committee of faculty from the Liberal Arts Department.
The essays are judged anonymously and each essay will have two readers.
There will be three winners. The prizes are:
- $125 for first place,
- $100 for second place and
- $75 for third place.
The money is given by the Associated Students of Cerritos College.
