On Oct. 7, the ASCC held a meeting to discuss various topics to hit the school this week.
With several elections and campaigns going around campus, there were quite a few points to get across.
One important aspect of the meeting this week was the speech given by Tom Chavez, candidate for the Board of Trustees.
Chavez talked about his experiences at Cerritos College, having gone here more than 30 years ago, and was once a senator on the ASCC back when he was a student.
He spoke to the senators and jury leaders, explaining, “I know what you all go through. I was sitting where you’re sitting 30 years ago. This school means a lot to me.”
Chavez discussed the importance of electing your leaders, telling the senators to “go out and vote.”
He also discussed the troubles with students transferring to UC campuses and other colleges.
“As a former student, I understand this school offers the academic side of the coin, as well as the workers side.”
Another topic he talked about was the budget cuts, saying, “The fees and the cutting of classes is not fair—not by any means. I cannot promise you that I’ll fix it, but I’m hear to listen to your problems.”
To close, Chavez told the senators to “tell your friends to get involved.”

Nancy Montgomery, coordinator of Student Health Services, was next up and she gave a lecture on doing your best to avoid sickness, most notably the flu.
She gave tips on how to avoid getting sick and hot to avoid getting people sick. She talked in brevity about the H1N1 virus, and how you avoid it.
Montgomery also let the senators know about the posters that will be going around campus, stressing the importance of hygiene and washing your hands.
“We’re trying to decrease the flu on campus,” she said.
As the meeting went on, many senators came up to the podium to let the other senators know about certain updates from last week.
Senator Tyrell talked about the updated ASCC Web site, saying “It’s getting worked up, and should be better.
Tyrell also talked about the WiFi situation, saying that the WiFi community is working hard to get the WiFi problem fixed.
Other notifications discussed were about the situation with donations to the Philippines, with one senator saying it “went really well.”
Another report was on Cal States and how the would be cutting over 50,000 students next semester.
The next meeting for the ASCC Senate will be this coming Wednesday, Oct. 14.
