Cerritos College held a job fair preparation and resume writing workshop from 11:30 to 12:30in the eops building on Oct. 13.
Ten students from Cerritos attended the workshop and learedn job hiring skills, like how to dress for a job interview and preparing a resume for an employer.
The workshop was hosted by Aurora Segura, a counselor at Cerritos and one of the main people that hosted the job fair workshop for students to learn job hiring skills that they will need all throughout their lives.
She explains to students the reason why most people are not being hired for the position they apply for is because of the way they look, the way they present themselves and the content they have in the resume.
She also explained why people remain unemployed and said, “40 percent of people are unemployed for poor personal appearance, 80 percent cannot describe their job skills, 85 percent do not look hard enough and 90 percent cannot answer problem questions.”
However, she added ways to adjust those problems.
She also gave hints to students how to search and find jobs and gave the students statistics and good examples for a successful job interview, such as a firm hand shake and maintaining eye contact to your potential employer.
One of the students that attend the workshop was Adrian Estevan, undecided major. Estevan said he learned new ideas, such as how to look for a job.
“Its interesting. [Learning] how to fill out a resume sounds like a good idea. I think everyone should come,” he said.
One of the other students that also attended the workshop was Mary Corona a theatre arts major, who was also benefitting from the lesson and said, “I just want to be prepare and be ready for questions for the job fair. I learned a lot, like how to write a resume, how to do a cover letter and how to a job interview.”
Student Placement Specialist Christina The explains the purpose of the workshop and said, “The purpose of the workshop is to help students find a job and get and reactive skills they will need if they want to get the job they are applying for.” She also added that the workshop is “something more students should do because is very important for them to get this information.”
The work shop is something that happens every week before the school job fair and prepares students for the jobs they could apply for at the fair .
Segura said, “Even though the workshop is something that does not happen every day, I hope it will change and we will have more time helping students get the techniques they will need. “
