The ASCC successfully passed a resolution last week to increase the wifi presence in the Learning Resource Center and the library.
Freda Judie, business major, said, “Compared to last semester, I wasn’t satisfied with the service, [it was] pretty slow, but I hope it will be better this semester.”
The ASCC cabinet passed the resolution Nov. 22 with nine voting yes, one voting no, and one abstention.
The resolution then came before the ASCC senate on Nov. 24, where 19 voted yes, no one voted no, and there were four abstentions.
Psychology major Gabriela Cottola thinks that it’s a very good idea to increase the wifi capabilities on campus.
“It allows more opportunities for encouraging people to come into the library and spending time to study at school.”
Joseph Silva, philosophy major and president pro tem of the ASCC senate, explained the reasoning behind the resolution.
“It’s because the [information technologies department] has been in lack of funds, and they already set up a lot of the hot spots in the SS building and the initial ones in the LRC building as well as the student center, that we felt like we could chip in to help out because everyone’s kind of struggling right now because the economy.”
According to Silva, the $3000 in funds that will be providing two new hot spots weren’t going to affect any clubs or activities that were currently running at Cerritos.
“And I know during peak hours it’s hard for a lot of the students to get on the wifi, especially between 11 [a.m.] to 12:30 [p.m.], so the additional ports in the library, the LRC building, will relieve some of that congestion, which a lot of students have been complaining about,” Silva said.
Chemical engineering major and member of the ASCC senate Alexander Hage said “I’m glad it passed because a lot of students have had a lot trouble connecting on the internet.”
“So hopefully, students will be able to go in there, have better access, and be able to work on their laptops,” Hage said.
Felix Kim, political science major and member of the ASCC senate, said, “I think it’s a great thing. It would definitely make connecting a lot easier and it might even speed things up.”
