Jasmin Ramirez, with her running mate Julian Del Real-Calleros and Areal Hughes were announced as the president, vice president, and student trustee-elect for the next school year hours after the polls were closed on April 7.
“We wish the best for Jasmin. We’ll make sure to help her whenever she needs help,” Aldo Lopez, who was a write-in candidate for president, said.
This year’s election came with a low outcome of students who were taking the running for the open positions with only one team running for the presidency, and two students going for the student trustee vote, the other being Nallelly Badillo.
The deadline for students to be eligible to be on the ballot was weeks prior to the election.
According to Lopez, there were originally four pairs of students that he knew of that wanted to run for president, but they had to drop out of the race because of personal reasons.
“Originally, I had every plan and intention in running for president, but there were plenty of people who were running; there were about four candidates who seemed like viable, good, reliable people, but 3 ended up dropping, so the intentions ended up becoming an obligation.”
Because there was only one team running for the president position, Lopez and his running mate, Justin McIntyre, wanted to at least give Ramirez and Del Real-Calleros a challenge for their spot, and let voters know that they had a choice.
“People had a choice,” McIntyre said.
“We had supporters all around us out and letting people know they had a choice, and we were the second option. We did the best we could, and I wish Jasmin luck.”
Neither Rameriz nor Del Real-Calleros were available for comment.
The newly elected student representatives will be sworn in during the Spring Awards Banquet in May, and will begin their term in the beginning of the fall semester.
