The Cerritos College football team will not have last season’s starting quarterback Kane Wilson, but head coach Frank Mazzotta is still positive about the two quarterbacks who are trying out for the position.
Wilson led the team to 9-3 record and helped the team advance to the playoffs before losing to Mount San Antonio College in the final game of 2010.
Mazzotta says Wilson is “shopping around” for other Community College’s right now and believes Wilson is not a “true falcon” anyway.
Sophomore linebacker Jay Suai believes the team has a big competition now for the quarterback position between Sophomores Morgan Fennell and Brandon Denker.
Suai commented on the leadership of Denker.
“One time at practice we did not have a coach and he was telling us what to do and when to start. He just has that leader mentality.”
The spring practices have just as many questions as year’s prior, but in the Falcons favor, Mazzotta has 35 years of experience in rebuilding teams year after year for Cerritos College.
Although he refused to comment on individual players Mazzotta did comment on what he thinks of the roster he has so far this spring.
“The groups that we have had the last three years have been incredible. This group is falling right in line,” Mazzotta said, “and I think we have a real good recruiting class coming in this year.”
Along with losing a starting quarterback, the Falcons are losing seven starting defensive players .
A couple of defensive players who look to make an impact this season are sophomores Alauna Finau and Josh Finau.
Both player have been with the team during the spring work-outs so far.
“It’s been hard, but good. There is a lot of work to be done but we are getting there.” Josh Finau said.
Many of the remaining players roles with the team have changed and so have their goals.
Alauna Finau’s goals for the 2011 season are, ” Just get as many sacks and tackles as I can, so I can help my team win and get as far as we can”.
The team lost 11 players from both sides of the ball to four-year schools, Alauna looks to have the same future, although he has not been recruited by a university.
“If I can choose where I would go, my Choice would be California Berkley because It is close, I like the players on the team and I like the program,” He said.
