The Cerritos College Manufacturing Department hosted an Open House in the Metals Building in room one on Aug. 11.
Open to the public, the open house had special guest public speakers, including facility members and sales managers, some of whom are Cerritos College alumni.
Terry Price, Department Chairman of Manufacturing Technology, said that this is held every semester.
“The reason why we did this on this day is because this it is the first day of open registration.
“So many of these people that are attending here have an opportunity to be with our staff, our faculty, see the facilities and also have an opportunity to enroll,” he said.
Price also said, “Many of our students work in the industry, and they are now able to come back and show the new students that are coming in the next semester about our different materials and processes that are out there in the plastics and composites industry.”
A total of $1,200 worth of scholarships were given out during the event.
“Our part time students will get $100 scholarships,” Price said.
12 students received scholarships that evening.
Tim Touve, who gave a presentation on Solar Inventing with plastics, said, “The things that are being taught [at Cerritos] are totally amazing, and a lot of people aren’t aware of this and how they could ever get this training.
“And people would be shocked to find out that it is found at Cerritos College.”
Price said that a total of 60 to 70 percent of the department’s students are working in the plastics industry.
These students come back to Cerritos to become better manufacturers and to finish their degrees or certificates.
Price said that Cerritos College is the only community college to offer a full degree and certificate in the state of California.
Touve, who is also a student at Cerritos, said, “One of the most important things about Cerritos College’s plastics department is we make surf boards here.”
