Many people have heard of the phrase, “Viva la revolucion,” but they may not understand what it actually means.

Cerritos College History Professor Walter Fernandez will host a presentation on Sept. 13th from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in S202 to talk about the origin of the phrase and will thoroughly explain Hispanic History.

He will also talk about the reason as to why some Hispanic countries have had economic problems.

“The desire for change affected both upper class elites. it affected also the people at the bottom, the peasantry,” Fernandez said.

The date of the presentation is near to the dates on which Chile, Central America, Mexico and Puerto Rico won their independence.

Fernandez explained the uniqueness of the annual presentation.

“Every year we had an event like this, and every year we emphasize something different.”

Fernandez continued with, “One year we emphasize the philosophies behind it, the ideology and the mindset of the revolutionaries.”

Fernandez will also lecture on leaders of these revolutions like, Mexico’s Miguel Hidalgo, Chile’s Bernardo O’Higgins, and Puerto Rico’s Ramon Emeterio Betances.

Students of all majors and faculty are invited to the event if interested.

Fernandez also mentioned follow-ups to the presentation. One of the follow-ups is on Sept. 20th in SS312 and it will focus on who actually won Mexico’s independence. On Sept. 22nd, there will be another follow-up that has been put together by students of the P.H.A (People’s History Association) and what will be discussed are the economic issues in the independence of the revolutionary countries.

Fernandez strongly encourages other clubs in Cerritos College to hold these kind of events, saying, “I think it’s important to try to encourage other faculty members and clubs to put on presentations like these.”
