Cerritos College nutritionist Hazel Ng and bookstore manager Robin Lee are working together to bring a variety of healthful food items to the bookstore.
The Cerritos College bookstore is now offering more nutritious items for students to choose from.
Items such as fresh sandwiches, salads, fresh fruits, and even protein shakes are now being offered alongside the standard hi-carbs fare.
Robin Lee says that the store is getting good feedback on the new food items.
“We’re getting great feedback, we looked around to see what kind of items we could bring on campus that weren’t offered around.”
For students who are a part of the Pound-by-Pound program being able to choose from healthier items makes it easier to maintain a healthy diet or healthy eating.
Ng said, “The students really appreciate it, especially the Pound-By-Pound participants because they have a hard time on campus, they don’t know what to choose because we have limited choices.”
Not only will the bookstore provide new and healthier items but the prices are also a big hit around campus.
“Prices are decent, anytime you come across healthy food, it’s going to be more on the expensive side,” kinesiology major Mike Inman said.
According to GoodFood.com, between 1970 and 2003 annual U.S per capita consumption of sugar and sweeteners increased in 19 percent, from 119 pounds to 142 pounds.
The bookstore plans on expanding and continuing to add more junk-food alternatives with more healthy food item choices.
