ASCC President Jasmin Ramirez vetoed a bill last week that was introduced to modify the selection process of ASCC awards committees.
SB11-069, which was passed on Feb. 14 after being introduced on Jan. 15, was presented with the purpose, “To prevent discrimination, retaliation and bias actions on behalf of the president and vice president of the Associated Students of Cerritos College and student members of such committee.”
ASCC Senator Yidegar Santiago Zuniga, the author of the bill, claims that students have approached him with concerns of selecting members of the committees.
He said, “Students came to me and said, ‘Could you do something about this?’
“What motivated me to start this was the students’ needs and to at least attempt to solve the problems that have been going on.”
Ramirez has declined to comment, forwarding all inquiries about the veto to Wednesday’s senate meeting, which will be held at 2 p.m. in BK 111/112.
