Cerritos career services CalWORKs reaches out to the campus with a message, our students are ready to work.
With the financial woes of the country’s economy it is extremely difficult for full-time and even part-time employment.
The CalWORKs Department understands this, and fully trains and prepares its students through a comprehensive screening and training process.
CalWORKs students are required to maintain a 2.0 grade point average, and a minimum of 9 units per semester, on top of a 20 hours per week work schedule.
CalWORKs invites other departments at Cerritos College to hire these students through the program.
When a CalWORKs student is hired, the department receives a substantial economic saving, the program pays 75 percent and the employer pays 25 percent.
Culinary arts major, Denise Quintero expresses her support and appreciation for the program, and encourages other students to sign up.
” It will help a lot of students who need help going to school, and for the students who are here all day full-time. It will be good to squeeze in a little time to work.”
CalWORKs is considering a win-win situation for both students and the departments hiring these students, for two reasons, these students are qualified, experienced, punctual and professional.
The second for the incentive of only paying 25 percent of the students paycheck.
Priscilla Crespin of business management, joined CalWORKs in 2008 and has been working with the program ever since.
Crespin is the secretary of the CalWORKs career services office and recommends that students take advantage of these kind of programs because they are here to help students in need.
“They help you by providing financial assistance in paying for tuition, books, educational supplies, even transportation, and child care.”
It also places students in a CalWORKs work study program, which is limited to a 2 year time limit based on the students major. Students are matched with their major so they can gain experience in that field, preparing them for the real world work-force.
