This year’s float contest and homecoming schedule revolving around the theme “Memorable Broadway” were discussed amongst the different clubs from Cerritos College at the Homecoming Kick-off Luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
The Homecoming Kick-off is put together by Amna Jara, Coordinator of Student Activities.
Clubs gather together and discuss upcoming semester highlights, deadlines, the homecoming court, as well as the homecoming dance, floats and theme for this year.
“I oversee the float building process and am one of the staff members on the float building sight. I will not be sponsoring anyone since it would be a conflict of interest for me since I work in this department,” said Jara.
To be eligible for homecoming court, you must be enrolled in at least 5 units, have a 2.0 GPA or higher, and you do not have to represent a club. The student body votes for each candidate they want to elect for homecoming court and for homecoming queen.
Some of the clubs that attended the luncheon were the Dream Club, Kabarkada, Leo’s Club Omega, Lions, Math, Model United Nations, Philosophy and the Veteran’s Club. Most of these clubs will be competing for a homecoming float award, the Amy Dozier Sweepstakes, and the Best Over-All Award.
None of the clubs participating in the float contest have yet to mention the theme for their floats, except for the Student Veteran’s Club.
The Student Veteran’s Club Secretary Raul Lopez-DeLeon said, “I think we might be putting together a Grease float this year.”
Vice President for the Veteran’s Club, Alfred Velapatino, said, “Last year we won two awards, this year we are looking to win more.”
Last year the Veteran’s Club won the Golden Falcon Award (Best Utilization of Color) and the Bench Award (Best Craftsmanship).
Math Club Advisor Angela Conley said, “We will be defending our title, the most educational float.”
Math Club Secretary Genesis Esqueda added to Conley’s comment and said, “No one takes that from us.”
Political Science major Carlos Rodriguez is representing the Models United Nations Club. The idea for their float, Rodriguez said, is “something political.”
The Kabarkada club is discussing who they might sponsor for homecoming queen as well as whether or not they will put together a float this year.
For those interested in becoming the next homecoming queen, applications are available Monday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. and the application deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m.
For those clubs who will be creating a float, you can check out a float bed on Monday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. near the visitor’s side of the Cerritos College football stadium.
The floats will be judged on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m.
The Homecoming ceremony will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Cerritos College football stadium.
