Choosing a major became a little easier with the presentation of different pathways at the All Major Fair held on Wednesday, Nov. 14 in front of the Learning Resource Center on the Library walkway.
The event was open to all students and visitors looking to see what is offered by different departments and divisions here at Cerritos College.
The Automotive Sciences Department was represented by Tony Baron, which presented a program co-sponsored by Ford Motor Company called ASSET.
ASSET is a 2-year program designed to introduce students to the automotive repair industry with classroom instruction and eventually hands-on experience in the real world as a training mechanical specialist.
Asset Program student Fernando Paez makes the long journey from Victorville four times a week to participate in the program.
According to Paez, his family has a strong history of working in the automotive industry.
His Father was a mechanic and his brothers either work in or own their own automotive business.
Paez’s options were limited when Riverside Community College dropped its program recently and he heard that Cerritos offered its own version as an alternative.
According to the Career Service Center, choosing a major has all kinds of misconceptions.
Some of those misconceptions include:
- Choosing a major means deciding what career the student will pursue.
- Their major may dictate that future career.
- Every career has a corresponding major.
- Once they choose a major, their decision is irreversible.
- Everyone already knows what they want to major in.
Those departments represented at the fair included:
- Philosophy
- Engineering Design Technology
- Earth Science/Geography
- Automotive
- Cosmetology
- English
- Cerritos College DSP&S (in support of their students)
- Speech
- Biology
- Teacher TRAC
- Court Reporting
- Administration of Justice
- Anthropology/Sociology
- Computer Information Sciences
- Chemistry
- Physics
Victoria Castaneda, who was applying makeup in the Cosmetology booth, said, “I was influenced by my nephew who comes here.”
She wants to open her own salon after graduating and has been interested in cosmetology since she was a child.
At the Biology table, Dr. Scottie Henderson was showing students how an education in Biology leads to career path in medicine and other “extremely cool” directions.
She said that, ”Biology can be found in zoology to medicine.”
April Griffin was the attendant at the speech area.
According to Ms. Griffin, “The department offers a concentration in communication.”
“There are a variety of careers that benefit from communications including marketing, human resources business and team building.”
