Marketing major and Business Club member, Lourdes Ibanez was raising funds for his club by selling Jamaica, Horchata and other beverages and foods during Diversity Week at Falcon Square.
“It’s also to have fun and to let people know what the Business Club is doing.” he said.
Other clubs that participated in raising diversity awareness and Earth Day awareness were, Operation Outreach, Make it Happen Club, Phi Theta Kappa club, and the Environmental Club.
Psychology major Sukyi Naing from Operation Outreach commented on the club member’s goal for the event,”(Monday) is national Earth Day so we’re collecting four reusable bottles or cans in exchange for these (Cerritos College bottles).”
Biology major Marnie Arcilla was out in Falcon Square and experienced what the booths had to offer.
“It’s really good we came here and recycled we got free it’s not free we brought water bottles from home and exchanged it for this (bottle) we also bought Panda cookies.”
Undecided major Alieen Espinoza said she feels that clubs represented Earth Day well.
“I think they … all have their own goals they want to achieve.” She said.
Espinoza also believes the clubs set good examples with this event.
Nursing Major Angelina Amezcua from the Make it Happen Club explained why her and her club members were participating in the event “Today we are having a bake sale to fundraise our current project which is Jimmy’s film.”
The Phi Theta Kappa Club was also out in Falcon Square, where it had a booth set up with cupcakes, some decorated like pandas to raise awareness for the species.
According to Phi Theta Kappa member Megan Anaya the proceeds went to the World Wide Wild Life Foundation to help endangered animals.
“Overall we’re hoping everybody will get the point we are doing which is saving the wild life, endangered species, especially the giant panda the goal of this is to make enough money to make a difference.” Anaya said.
Clubs on campus have more events planned to promote Diversity Week, starting with Student Appreciation Day on April 23, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. where free tacos will be given out to the first 500 students on campus.
On April 24 from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a Global Village event where different clubs will display all types of cultures and their foods which will be held in Falcon Square.
This event is hosted by the International Students Association.
Finally on April 25 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. is the People’s First Language Presentation, held in the room S201.
