Associated Students of Cerritos College Cabinet met to discuss the implementation of Scantron vending machines on campus, appointing cabinet representatives and a committee on the rules and regulations of ASCC government.
President Eduardo De La Rosa presented an update on the Scantron vending machines.
According to him, in the early stages of the idea, he was wondering if it was was something ASCC could directly fund, but that upon closer scrutiny it would be in violation of the contract with Follett.
Eventually Follett agreed to fund the machines and fill it with its own materials.
“It’s ADA [American Disabilities Act] compliant, so that means there’s braille on the keypads, LED lights for people who have a hard time seeing and wheelchair accessible,” he said.
De La Rosa added that the vending machines were environmentally friendly.
Cabinet also elected two representatives for the joint meeting with the board of trustees.
Commissioner of External Affairs Jessica Gremata and Commissioner of Career Education Enrique Rodriguez were appointed to represent the cabinet branch for the joint meeting with the board of trustees.
Gremata said, “It’s very humbling because this is my first year in government and to already have a position in cabinet and speak for the students, [the cabinet] has a lot of faith in me.”
She added that although the draft agenda for the board of trustees hasn’t been showed to them, some issues she hopes to talk about are student unions and campus security.
Senator Daniel Flores Resendiz gave a presentation regarding the Committee for Rules and Regulations, which was formed to streamline and strengthen senate, he said.
During his presentation some suggestions he made were the change of language in the constitution, from gendered terms to gender neutral terms and the changing in outdated rules.
Resendiz said, “We haven’t officially created goals because I’m still waiting for more membership and student input.”
He added that regardless of that, the committee’s main goal is to ensure that students know their rights and get more student involvement in government.
Dean of Student Activities Dr. Gilbert Contreras, interjected with the suggestion that a staff member be put on the committee.
Resendiz said, “If [that staff member] is there for us as a resource that’s great, but I think us as students, have our autonomy and that it should be student only.”
“All it comes down to is dedicated students who are passionate about having a strong ASCC,” he added.
