Some of the issues talked about at ASCC Senate on Mar. 2 were student safety on campus, the overriding of a veto, and the soft launch of Falcon Kids.
The senators discussed the two fatalities in a forty-eight hour period across the street from the Cerritos College campus
Senator Joseph Fierro is working with the commissioner of Student Services in order to assure the student body that they are indeed safe on campus.
Fierro scheduled a meeting with Cerritos College Police Chief Tom Gallivan and will discuss what information is helpful in aiding students in protection under similar circumstances in the future.
Two officers were awarded honors for quick and dedicated response and defense of Cerritos College.
“The officers were some of the first responders to arrive on the scene at the shootings. One of the officers was administering CPR.
“It’s good to know that our police were able to respond and make sure that that wasn’t a situation that would be putting our campus in danger,” explained ASCC President Eduardo De La Rosa.
Senate deliberated during this session over whether or not to override a veto put in place by De La Rosa in regard of keeping or doing away with the budget and finance committee.
Fiero stated, “I abstained because of all the contradictions. There is a lot of confusion with the bylaws. Daniel Flores was trying to update them.
“President De La Rosa vetoed because he believed senate was trying to take over the budget and finance committee. Senate has the final decision as stated in the bylaws.”
The legislation that was approved was to change the budget and finance committee.
The senate was dealing with two things, the first being how the court was interpreting how the veto is executed and the second being if the senators wanted to take a stance on the presidential veto.
They veto stands making the legislation legitimate and the current committee will stay in place.
The last topic the senate saw was an overview of the soft launch of Falcon Kids which is an outreach to small children in the area that features a story book reading by homecoming queen and a appearance by Franco Falcon.
Vice president Jessica Germata summarized the program: “Falcon Kids is an initiative that was brought forth by a student last semester. Due to the senate’s discussion it was decided that it may not be something that allows student-initiative. They wanted the school or the district to take control.
“The initiative deals with early education. This student launched this program and he got the funding from the Financial Aid department. He was able to do events where we go and read to students. Today was our test pilot. It’s starting a conversation about college.”
