The Career Center held a Resume Workshop in the Business Education building on Tuesday, March 29 at 11 a.m.
With eight students in attendance, DSP&S counselor, Aurora Segura presented a power point of information on how to create the perfect resume.
Over 15 handouts were given before the presentation of information on resumes and job information. The handouts included sample resumes, interview tips, career centers workshops, sample references, volunteer work listings, and tips for job fairs.
Segura spoke in her presentations about all the components of a resume like a heading, objective, cover letter, skills, experience, references, education and foreign language.
She discussed how important the skills area is because most employers only take 30 to 60 seconds looking at a candidates resume, paying close attention to the skills area.
She also talked about how vital the presentations of resumes matter to employers and to keep it neat and clutter free. For instance, make sure it is typed, well organized, minimal bold and printed on light colored, high quality paper.
Saguaro emphasized how crucial it is that students tailor their resumes to the job they are applying to and have several resumes on hand.
She said, “The most important tip is for students to customize their resume because I see too many generic resumes. Those are not the type of resumes that stand out to employers, so it’s very important to customize.”
She added, “When I do these workshops, I try to give them more information as supposed to just the basics so that they can be the best candidate.”
She continued,“I hope at the very least that the students learned the basics on how to do a resume but more so a resume that will stand out to employers.”
Most students heard about the workshop through a friend, flyer or their professor. Each student in attendance learned something new about building a good resume.
Rosio Salazar, a business education major said, “I learned how to create a resume. For instance what words not to use like hardworking without elaborating on that skill so your resume stands out.”
Timothy Chen, an undecided major also said, “The most important thing that I learned is how to put the cover letter in plain english and what a cover’s letter purpose.”
The career center also critiques resumes for a students with an appointment or on Wednesdays for walk in critiques.
