Almost daily, and most often during class, President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle, and Vice President Joe Biden have decided to email me for the usual things; a holiday greeting, an invitation to dinner, signing Barry’s birthday card and especially reminding us to give to the Obama 2012 re-election campaign.
During the last 5 days of September the campaign sent no less than one email a day
from people like Biden. These emails said things like, “If you know you’re going to donate to this campaign eventually, what’s stopping you from doing it right now?”
There are also emails regarding dinner with the president. That dinner with Barack was actually an invitation to be entered into a raffle for a chance at dinner as long as a minimum of three dollars was donated to his campaign.
According Rufus Gifford the national finance director for America admitted in an email that he knows they have been sending out a lot of emails lately. His reasoning, “it was due to the fact they were staring down a critical fundraising deadline on Friday October 30th.”
Cerritos College psychology major Yessinia Hernandez spoke about whether she was aware the Obama campaign was sending such anecdotal invites she said, “I get those emails. I liked the Father’s day one from Michelle [Obama]. It is good that they target young people because they are often students who can catch up on the campaign by reading a quick email.”
These types of emails from Michelle seem to have a personal feel and resonate with supporters. In the email from Father’s day Michelle spoke of when she and Barack had their first child, saying, “Barack often says that he decided that day that if he could be anything in life, he’d be a good dad, and he dedicated himself then and there to making sure our daughter had every opportunity he could provide.”
Cerritos College art major Vanessa Barbossa said she enjoyed her emails from Ron Paul’s campaign but not Obama’s. “I like the emails, getting updates about the campaign and issues that the candidate plans to address, but about like holiday emails, although they may sound nice and seem to try to be thoughtful it just feels like I’m getting another bulk email from someone trying to sell me something.”
A favorite presidential email was the email received on the President’s 50th birthday in which Michelle opened by saying, “Every day, I see Barack make choices he knows will affect every American family. That’s no small task for anyone — and more proof that he’s earning every last one of those gray hairs.”
