The true meanings of holidays are constantly downplayed and eventually, we are going to get to the point where we might as well not celebrate them at all.
Thanksgiving is definitely one of those aforementioned holidays.
What should be a time to remember to be grateful for everything we have is now a day to gain a few surplus pounds.
We are constantly reminded daily of all the conflict going around in several parts of the world and while we may not be in the best shape, we as a population should at least be able to appreciate the ability to wake up every day in a country that doesn’t completely subject us to any injustice.
In this “land of opportunity,” we are allowed the freedom to get an education, a job, and suffrage.
We are given chances to make a better life for our families.
So why aren’t we celebrating that? Why aren’t we taking into consideration that our country has progressed past some of the world’s worst situations including the world wars, segregation and 9/11.
Instead, we are infatuated at the idea of getting as full as possible, then camping out in front of a department store all night to catch the best deals on merchandise for “Black Friday” the following day.
Take the time to actually think about what you’re thankful for this upcoming holiday. Understand and appreciate the opportunities you’ve been given. It’s truly the least you can do.
