Do students really need financial aid all the way up until 90 units? I would like to go ahead and say yes. Students do need financial aid up until 90 units.
Community colleges are filling up more and more every semester and the schools are just going to keep getting worse.
When it comes to registration time, students will take whatever they can get, which means sometimes students will take a few classes that won’t account for his/her major or won’t be transferable to a UC.
Financial aid is a big matter nowadays in school with the recession and all of the budget cuts going around.
Even though students only need 60 units in order to qualify for an associates degree getting financial aid cut off at 90 units might be a little too much.
If a student has a plan, meeting every semester with their counselor, and is keeping up with his/her classes I don’t think there’s a reason for financial aid to be cut off.
Then again, you do get those students who are going to school just to get the check every semester. That’s when I think the financial aid office should pay close attention to certain students and see if he/she has a plan or is just undecided and is taking random classes.
To me, I don’t think that financial aid should be cut off at 90 units, there’s just too much going on at community colleges for a student to finish their goals on time.
