Talon Marks should get priority registration just like athletes do. A lot more students here are performing busy schedules and hard work on campus, and do not get priority enrollment.
Athletes have priority enrollment along with students who are part of the following groups, Disabled Students Program and Services , Extended Opportunity Program and Services, Veteran Students of the United States Armed Forces and honor students.
If athletes are deserving of such privilege, Talon Marks should too.
Talon Marks staff should be required to take a certain amount of units per semester, while keeping its grades up in order to be able to have priority enrollment just like athletes.
It is unfair for Cerritos College only to reward some hard-working students. Talon Marks students just like athletes hold a hectic agenda, their objective also benefits other students not just themselves.
The Cerritos College newspaper is a perfect example of hard-working students that literally work for Cerritos College with no pay and no recognition from the campus.
Just like athletes, the newspaper staff, also known as Talon Marks, competes each semester at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges. At this conference, students test their journalistic skills while working on the paper throughout the semester, and the competition is no joke.
JACC is a state-wide competition where community colleges all over California meet to challenge one another, El Camino College, East Los Angeles College, Fullerton College, Rio Hondo, Santa Monica College, Glendale City College, Long Beach City College, Golden West College and Orange coast College are just some colleges around the area that participate in this competition. Just like athletes, all journalist prepare themselves all semester to star at this competition.
Journalism students not only compete against other community colleges state-wide, but also the duties that they hold can be quite stressful, while still trying to succeed academically in other courses. Making Talon Marks deserving of this priviledge.
Not only student athletes are deserving of priority enrollment, the Culinary Arts Program and the Cosmetology Department have students who provide services and do not get priority enrollment.
The Culinary Arts Program students cook meals available to all students, staff and other customers in campus, while giving students basic skills of what is like to be in the restaurant industry. A low fee for products used to cook, and other tools needed such as utensils.
At the Cosmetology Department, students provide services for a low fee as well, not only to students but also for any one who would like to test their skills. The fee covers the products needed to support the services given.
Priority enrollment should not only be available to athletes, but to all students who actually need it and deserve it most importantly.
