A new hair craze called glow in the dark hair also known as black light hair has become popular in the opening weeks of 2016.
It gives a fun and bold appearance by day and your own disco party by night.
This 2016 hair trend is reaching new heights of creativity and has allowed people to stand out even in the dark.
The Glow-in-the-Dark hair is usually used for raves, outdoor concerts and nightclubs but in 2016, it has grown more popular for an everyday unique style.
Cosmetology major, Lynzee Kadana says, “I think it’s cool and a great way to express yourself. I would do it but only a slice of my hair.”
Most dyes contain florescence powder, glow powder, fluro-ink and light sensitive ingredients.
The process is like any other hair dyeing process which takes a couple of hours and a trained professional.
Most stylists start by pre-lightening the hair which strips its color turning it essentially blonde.
Women with darker colored hair will have a longer and more rigorous treatment than an already blonde-haired woman.
Tokaia Champ, cosmetology major said, “I think the idea and look is nice for special occasions like hair shows or for costume purposes but this mainstream trend of damaging your hair is not cool.”
It hasn’t yet been reported that it causes any more damage to your hair than a normal dyeing hair process would if done properly.
Hair stylists recommend to use professional products that are semi-permanent and temporary dyes like Pravana, specifically their “Vivid Neons” line.
Hair stylist Elizabeth Davis of Hilights Salon in Lyndhurst, N.J. told TODAY, that those products are typically better because they don’t penetrate the cuticle like most dyes.
They tend to sit on top of the hair and can be easily washed out or covered if you decide the glow in the dark hair is not for you.
