The Warriors escaped with a 65-64 victory against the men’s basketball team on Wednesday.
The Warriors held a small lead early in the first half until Falcons guard Sean Chennault got a nice reverse lay up and foul to take the lead.
With a simple game plan by coach Jesse Teplitzky to “pressure the ball and limit turnovers,” the Falcons forced turnovers and capitalized offensively to sustain their small first half lead.
To add to some building momentum with their defense, Falcons guard and leading scorer Van Girard made a fantastic buzzer beating three point basket to end the half.
The game stayed close and the Falcons continued with the game plan through the majority of the second half until El Camino began to build a little momentum of its own with two consecutive three pointers from guard Lonnie Bennett who finished the game with 24 points.
From then on, the game became a see-saw battle when Warriors guard Paul Davis gave them their first lead since the first half with a lay up.
Thanks to some tough, clutch shots from Falcons guard Gregory Preer and a monster rebounding game from Falcons forward Marcellus Jackson, the battle stayed tight but the Warriors proved to be up to the task as well.
After a quick timeout by the Warriors, El Camino guard Lavon Myles attacked the rim and drew a foul with a chance to take a lead.
After making the first free throw, followed by another timeout, Myles nailed the second free throw giving them the lead and eventually the win.
However, the Falcons had one last chance to retaliate and a good play was executed but Gregory Preer was just off right on a good looking floater.
Teplitzky said the team’s plan was definitely to attack the basket being only down one and it got the look it wanted but Preer just didn’t connect on a shot he would make nine times out of 10.
Although this was indeed a tough loss, the Falcons can not afford to dwell as they host Long Beach City College, whom they’d lost to in November.
