Many players have come and gone during Ken Gaylord’s tenure as head coach of the Cerritos College baseball team but none have been closer to his heart than his son Brian Gaylord who currently plays third base for the Falcons.
Gaylord is entering his second season playing for Cerritos.
“I went to La Mirada with many of my teammates so coming here wasn’t that big of a deal to me because I was able to play with many of my friends from high school,” the younger Gaylord said.
Gaylord is in his 17th season as the head coach of the Falcons and besides his son Adam Gaylord who plays for Stanford.
Coach Gaylord said that he worries more about his son at Stanford than his son that plays at Cerritos because he’s farther away and can’t see him every day.
The Gaylords try to keep what happens on the field separate from their home life.
“One of our rules is that we don’t talk about the game at home but I must admit I have broken that a few time,” coach Gaylord said.
However they do not get a lot of time to talk after games.
“He has night classes and is not home a lot after games,” coach Gaylord said. Maybe that the way he plans it.”
The younger Gaylord’s teammates don’t see any favoritism given to him by his dad.
Shortstop Max McEleney said, “He is just one the guys on the field coach Gaylord is pretty fair if you mess up you mess and he will get into Brian is no exception.”
One of the coaches had the same view.
“It’s not like little league if Brain is messing up coach will no problem benching him,” assistant coach Jack Brooks said.
Coach Gaylord admits that he might be harder on his son than the rest of the team.
But his son does not agree.
I don’t think he is any harder on me than anyone else,” he said.
