The Cerrios College baseball team suffered its second loss in a row, falling to Pasadena City College, 6-4, on March 7.
This was the first time in 20 years that Pasadena beat Cerritos.
Although this game was just another non-conference win for the Lancers, coach Evan O’Meara of Pasadena said that beating the Falcons for the first time in 20 years definitely put the team over the hump and got a long awaited chip off of his shoulders.
The Lancers took a 3-2 lead and held on to it through the majority of the game until the bottom of the seventh inning when, Cerritos sparked an attempted comeback with an RBI double from freshman Lemuel Johnson and an RBI double from freshman David Neff to take a 4-3 lead.
At the top of the fourth inning, Falcons’ freshman Joe Terry made a strong throw from the outfield to home plate that saved a run and then catcher Paul Hayes got a Lancer base runner out at second base that ended the inning and sparked the team’s attempted comeback.
The Falcons connected frequently with Pasadena pitches but the Lancers infield showed fine athleticism defensively which, Joe Terry said was the primary factor in the Falcons defeat.
O’Meara also credited that defensive effort to his well experienced infielders who have two to three years experience in community college baseball.
The kind of hustle and effort shown by Pasadena was the subject of coaching conversation by Falcons coach Ken Gaylord after the loss, demanding that his ball club play with more heart and team play.
The 4-3 lead Cerritos had did not hold as Pasadena sophomore Evan Bloem got an RBI at the top of the eighth inning to tie the score at 4-4.
That play was followed by an RBI double from Lancer sophomore Jeremy Camacho to take the 6-4 lead which, turned out to be the game deciding factor of the game.
With a chance to end its losing streak, Cerritos will host Chaffey College March 10 at 2 p.m.
