“We had no answer for Villalobos,” were the disappointed words of LA Harbor baseball coach Marco Alvillar after Falcons pitcher Chris Villalobos pitched a phenomenal game against the Seahawks, pitching a complete game shutout as Cerritos won, 6-0.
Although Villalobos pitched well for the Falcons, the victory on Saturday was a total team effort on the offensive end as well which, is exactly what Cerritos coach Ken Gaylord and DH Joe Terry stressed in their previous losses.
Falcons catcher David Neff contributed with three hits and two RBIs on the day as well as key hits from Terry, first baseman Jacob Eaton, shortstop Max McEleney, second baseman Brandon Pesante, and a nice bunt in particular from third baseman Brian Gaylord which, started out a single got advanced him to second base, thanks to an LA Harbor error.
The Seahawks only got four hits on the day and Villalobos made sure those hits did not turn into runs, playing sharp defense in addition to his pitching performance.
LA Harbor batters struck out four times and were only walked once the entire game, getting very little to no production from their offense.
This win for the Falcons ends their two-game losing streak, making them 6-5 in conference play.
The Falcons never let up their lead the entire game, staying aware defensively and, as Terry put it, “playing as one unit.”
They didn’t just try and get out of an inning when being left with two outs in an inning.
The majority of the Falcon hits came with two outs left, allowing them to score more runs and secure the victory.
The final run of the game was scored by a base hit from Pesante, which allowed catcher Paul Hayes to score right after he got a double with two outs in the inning.
The Seahawks’ luck showed early in the game when Falcons outfielder Jake Mayoral was hit by a pitch from Phil Hons, whom had a struggling ball game.
This kind of play from the Falcons will certainly keep their playoff and state hopes alive.
