Falcons baseball has had somewhat of a whirlwind week as of late.
As Cerritos chases its chances of a playoff berth, the Falcons have gone through convincing wins and disappointing losses in the process.
Its latest test on the playoff quest would come in a series with the crosstown rival school, Long Beach City College.
“Beating the Falcons to try and take the SCC title will definitely be sort of icing on the cake for our program,” were the hopeful words of Viking coach Casey Crook.
That title hope would be out of the question, at least that at the end of Saturday’s game at Long Beach City as Cerritos won, 7-3, and put its conference title hopes in to a near reality.
However, Tuesday afternoon’s game would turn out to be in the favor of the Vikings.
The game stayed tight through the fourth inning until the Falcons scored two runs, thanks to an RBI triple by second baseman Joe Terry, allowing shortstop Max McEleney to score from first base.
In Saturday’s game as well, Cerritos jumped out to a nice early lead with six runs scored compared to the Vikings zero through the fifth.
“If we plan on making a serious playoff run, we have to play the entire game like we do in the first four or five innings,” said assistant coach Jack Brooks.
The Falcons youth has shown just that this season both negatively as well as positively.
First baseman Josh Bryan hit a single home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, edging Cerritos closer to tying the score but Max McEleney struck out with two outs and the Falcons fell, 4-3.
On a positive note for the Falcons, a personal achievement by Joe Terry was accomplished when he hit his thirteenth triple of the season, tying former Falcon Ron Ewart, who set the record in 1985.
The Falcons will finish out the season Thursday and Friday against Los Angeles City College at home to try for its playoff berth.
Although the pitching has been strong for Cerritos, with Villalobos only allowing two hits through six innings, the help defense will have to be mistake free and disciplined in order to secure that spot in the playoffs.
The Cubs may be a rebuilding program but should not be taken lightly, especially since the Falcons only beat them by one run in the two teams last meeting.
