In last Saturday’s win against Citrus College, coach Frank Mazzota earned the 200th win of his career at Cerritos.
“Our 6-0 record this season and the great group of players we have makes the accomplishment all the more special.”
The past few seasons for Mazzota have not been up to his standard of football, but the 100+ players he has to work with this season have been exactly what he has expected.
It is important to Mazzota that he be able to share the win with the players he has this season saying, “As a group, they have put in the hard work and never stopped competing, even when mistakes were made.”
Mazzota expressed that players he has coached in the past few seasons didn’t have the maturity and competitiveness to make the type of comeback victory that was made in the 200th win against Citrus.
“A mixture of the bye week, the weather, and lack of sharpness turned into a few fumbles and interceptions but this group keeps fighting and competing.”
Mazzota couldn’t express enough how grateful and proud he felt to have such a group of committed and mature players.
“If we would have just had a losing or subpar record so far, today would just be another day for me, but it’s a great accomplishment coaches don’t earn often.”
He also said that what makes the accomplishment so special is the fact that he can tell the players have bought in to the football program and they want to win for him.
Earning his 201st victory versus Riverside College would also be a good feeling for Mazzota humorously stating, “our new school president Linda Lacy came from Riverside so there is a little motivation in that.”
Mazzota also sees a bright future ahead as well with new freshman talent that has played well so far and “although they may be a little slow to buy into the system and maturity factor it takes, our older players are stepping up well as leaders.”
